Seo, Is It Advisable To Register With Directories Which Insist That You Link Back?…any Other Seo Tips!?

Stay away from link farms or FFA’s. They usually cycle out the older listings in favor of newer ones. That means you have to keep going back and re-submitting. Also, never link back to anyone if you don’t want to.
Best place to start is http://www.dmoz.com
It’s the hardest to get listed in, but the most respected.

    Yes and no.
    If the directory page that your site is linked from has a higher Google Page Rank than your site then maybe. If the directory page that your site will be listed on has no page rank then why bother. If the directory is for sites that are general or covers a niche related to your site then it might make sense.
    If you are required to have the link back on your index page then think twice about it. You don’t want to mess up your home page with a bunch of links to directories unless that is what your site is about. If you can link back from any page then why not? Add a page of links to your site.

    It all depends on how the directory is set up. Two of the websites I operate are for apartments and real estate. I only link to a business for the category on that page and geographic location.
    The best rule for links is only link to related businesses. My websites http://www.myhomezero.net and http://www.aptzero.com are built by linking to very specific businesses in specific cities, this keeps the links relevant and gets a decent pagerank fairly quickly.

    Frankly, any directory that needs a link from you isn’t getting enough traffic on its own to be of any use to you.
    For instance, DMOZ.org is a very popular directory, and does not need links to it from people who want to get listed. They get enough links just from being a good directory.
    But if they request a link, then they are saying they need your help in order to get traffic, because they can’t get any by virtue of how useful they are to users.
    Link exchanges themselves are useless for search. A link, to Google specifically, is one site voting for another site. If two sites vote for each other, then both votes cancel each other out.
    See, Google wants to know which sites other sites think are quality. But they know that all a site has to do to get a lot of links is make deals with other sites. That’s why paid links are also useless, even damaging, to a page.
    Instead, try to create quality content and spread it around using all of the social media tools that are currently available – Digg, StumbleUpon, YouTube, Facebook, etc. These sites have a lot of users, and you can appeal to them directly. If they like what they find on your site, they will propagate links on their own.
    Also, don’t be afraid to run a press release if you have something worth talking about. They are a great way to get word about your site on a lot of online news sources, and you can often include links to your site as well.
