I’ am doing a report on service marketing, my chosen sector is retail. I want to focus on home-shopping or online retailing. If a retail organisation offers consumers the opportunity to purchase their product online, does this constitute as a service they provide? Or will have to be an actual service like flower delivery service (Next PLC) or wedding services (Debenhams).

Not very much not with the credit crunch around, these next few years will the worst years for Retail.

    I would definitely see offering online shopping as a service an organization provides…It is still the organization selling you their products they are just giving you other options on how to access their products. I am personally a big fan of online shopping as I work 8-5 and have 2 small kids and a husband at home I don’t have time (or energy) to go shopping, so the organizations that offer their products online are the ones that get my business.

    Retail is the final point in supply chain where product or service converts itself into money. So point of retail is point of this exchange with final consumer of the goods/services. In that sense online shopping is just another medium like catalogue or telvision selling or direct marketing and not another service.
    Sevice in retailing is providing parking, shopping environment, signages, readable bold offers, timely communication etc. Retail marketing will also involve right packaging, right products, right pricing and right place.
    For purpose of your study service marketing in retail will be marketing of beauty service, travel agency service etc. where there is no tangible product that is exchanged but a service of value to the customers.
