i want to set up my own music shop?

Question by Duane B: i want to set up my own music shop?
i would love to set up a business primarily selling vinyl records, vinyl cleaning and all related merchandise. those around me think there is no money in it and im being daft… but i would love to do it. i just don’t know where to start! can anyone help me?
how much would it cost?
where are the suppliers/manufacturers?
online/market/both?
im really struggling to convince those around me it is a viable idea. any suggestions/help would be much appreciated!

Dont know much about the manufacturer bit but if you are looking for a market [ people interested in music and the like] you are better off letting people know about it and building contacts from either or all of Facebook, Bebo, Myspace [and Youtube -a maybe].

If you want you can then branch out in terms of promoting it on free sites – http://www.sellit-right.com [free] and even use http://www.ebay.com and http://www.amazon.com is best for selling DVD’s and Music etc

    Listen to your friends !!! You would have a small market and one getting smaller by the month.

    You are one of a very tiny minority. To you vinyl is still king, to 99.99% of the population vinyl is a dead as the proverbial Dodo.

    Selling a few prized discs amongst like minded enthusiasts is one thing, but a business needs to bring in a living wage on top of the ongoing costs, day in, day out, week in, week out. So many people think because they have a strong interest and an expertise in some thing that they can turn it into a business, it does not take them long to realise that their interest is not shared by enough people within their area to make a shop viable. In my local small country town i have seen a half dozen of these what i call ‘hobbyists’ shops open and close (within weeks) in the last year alone.

    Duane,

    talk to people in the business and see how they are finding it. Can you run this on-line as an evening job and see how it goes? Get a businessplan and some advice from your local business link!
