Companies pay good money to have their websites show up first! That is how google makes its money.

It’s through advertising, like others have said… here’s an alternative web search engine, where they donate $.01 for each search: http://www.goodsearch.com/Default.aspx

    Advertisements.

It is called “pay-per-click” ads or websites. Each company who has an ad on Google, pays google just a few cents everytime you click on their ad or website. But, these company’s don’t pay until you click.

How does myspace and facebook make so much money?
Because people use it and a certain percentage goes back to the owner of whatever the company may be, such as google.

from advertising and company placement on the search lists

If Google charge you an arm and a leg for your site advertisement, you won’t use its service, right? Its pay-per-click might cost you like approximately only $50 per month, or let’s say 1 click costs you 20cents. But when you search in google, there are millions are search results. Majority of the people will click through at least 5 links in the search results. And people use search engines more than once a day. So, let’s do that math for just the average bare minimum
2 million people * 5 searches click per day * 20 cents per click = $2,000,000 per day just from pay per click advertisements.
In 2005, 6billions came from ads out of the total revenue 6.2 billion.
There are other way of getting money like database service that they offer and stocks and other partnership with big companies.

  • Manual says:

    They have lots of advertisements

  • David D says:

They get lots and lots of visitors, which means they can sell lots and lots of advertising. They might not charge very much for each display of an advert, but ten million pennies makes for a significant amount of money.
And they need so many server farms because they have so many visitors, and the amount of data they are searching is so large.

Advertisments baby……many advertisements buy space on there sites and they pay Google to put them on the spaces

  • newsong says:

One word: Advertising. Google is the biggest search engine, so millions of people will see a targeted ad that they are more likely to click because it’s in context with the search you made.

  • Matt L says:

Big companies, like Ebay, pay massive amounts of money to get advertizements on the side, or even to have links to their sites at the top. I know it’s hard to believe that they can make enough money from that, but they probably have to pay every month. Google also owns YouTube, which earns money the same way.
