The only way to get your site in the top search engines results without PPC (pay per click) is via search engine optimization
The search engine optimization techniques are so important because the best kind of website traffic by far is going to be search engine traffic. This type of traffic is traffic who is highly targeted and because of that not only are they going to be interested in reading what you have to say but they are also going to be more interested in buying whatever you have to offer.

There are two different things that you can do. If your selling shoes, and shoes in your site is the most common word then any other website, then yours will come up first. But, you can pay companies such as Google to sponsor you. Search for a product and you’ll see that their sponsors are separate from their web search.

You can either pay the search engines to place your site high or you can do the work to place your site high!
For instance my blog is about my adsense consulting. It shows up on page one of google’s search engine results when the terms “adsense consultant” and “adsense consulting” are typed in. How did I accomplish that? By doing the work to keep the content of my blog associated with those keywords.
You can either pay the search engines
    or
    do the work!

There are two ways. Pay per click, which is fast, you have more control, but you pay for the clicks. I’m sure you’ve seen the sponsored links surrounding natural search results.
Second, search engine optimization (SEO). This can take longer but the clicks are no charge.
If you have the budget for it. I’d start with PPC to get some traffic and sales. At the same time it would be best to start optimizing your site for natural search.
In either case, you should start with keyword research. There’s no point in coming up number one for a phrase no one is searching for. Here is a free tool to get you started. digitalpoint.com/tools/suggestion.
Once you have determined what phrases are relevant to your business there are three basic things to consider for SEO.
    1. Make sure search engines can see your site. Plain HTML is the best. Search engines cannot see a site that is one big image and make sure it’s not entirely in Flash.
    2. Let the search engines know what your site is about. Use the keywords through out your site, but don’t over use them. Remember these are “natural” results. Provide visitors with useful, quality content.
    3. Links, links, links. Search engines want to return the most relevant results for a given search. Links are a vote for your site and its content.
If you’re interested in learning more there are a ton of good sites out there. Hope this helps you get an idea of what you’re in for. It’s quite fun.

Well as far as I think the biggest search engine google does not take money from people to put their sites on the top search results , it all depends upon your website ranking, that is , how many other quality websites have a link to your website, if this increases then your ranking also increases.
