There are two different things that you can do. If your selling shoes, and shoes in your site is the most common word then any other website, then yours will come up first. But, you can pay companies such as Google to sponsor you. Search for a product and you’ll see that their sponsors are separate from their web search.
You can either pay the search engines to place your site high or you can do the work to place your site high!
For instance my blog is about my adsense consulting. It shows up on page one of google’s search engine results when the terms “adsense consultant” and “adsense consulting” are typed in. How did I accomplish that? By doing the work to keep the content of my blog associated with those keywords.

Well as far as I think the biggest search engine google does not take money from people to put their sites on the top search results , it all depends upon your website ranking, that is , how many other quality websites have a link to your website, if this increases then your ranking also increases.
