When i go to my search engine and type in items to search how do i erase ones i have previously used so they don’t appear everytime in the drop down box? thanks

I typed in my ex-husbands name as I had heard he had become an accomplished writer, now everytime the first two letters of his name are typed into a search engine, his entire name appears as an old choice. I don’t think my current husband would appreciate seeing it. HELP!

Every time I type something in to a search engine or a login name onto facebook it saves it and I want to delete it. On a windows computer you can simply hit delete and it is vanished forever, but the delete button on my mac serves as the backspace, therefore just erasing the letter typed in to get my ‘old’ search/login name there in the first place. Darn Macs!
